People arranging insurance while still living outside Portugal.
A product that covers treatment in Portugal does not necessarily accept applicants who have not yet moved there. Territory, residence and purchase timing are three separate checks.
Use a three-column note
When reading an offer, give each question its own space. This avoids interpreting a country list as an eligibility statement.
- Accepted residence: where must you live when applying?
- Purchase stage: before departure, after arrival or after becoming resident?
- Covered territory: where do the insured benefits apply?
Put the dates in writing
State your planned move date and ask which date controls eligibility. Also ask when cover begins and whether any benefits have waiting periods. A quotation should not be treated as proof that an application has been accepted.
Avoid an unexplained transition
If your plans change, ask whether the contract or certificate needs updating. Keep the old and new documents clearly labelled. The next step is to understand ongoing healthcare arrangements, rather than assume travel cover lasts for permanent residence.
Sources and further reading
Use these sources to explore the topic further. Check your insurance terms in the policy documents and ask the insurer to clarify any questions.
