Health insurance in Portugal: understand the options

A starting point for public healthcare and private insurance questions.

Who this is for

People moving to Portugal or already resident here.

Separate access to the public health service from the benefits of a private insurance contract. Having one does not, on its own, explain the other.

Public healthcare is one part of the picture

Portugal’s public system is the SNS. Official guidance distinguishes being given a user number from having costs covered by the SNS. Check your registration and applicable entitlement through the relevant public service.

Private cover needs its own reading

Read the product documents for eligibility, benefits and limits. Use a short list of questions when speaking with the provider.

  • How do networks and reimbursement work?
  • What amounts remain payable by you?
  • Which waiting periods and exclusions apply?
  • What happens if you move again or the contract renews?

Choose a question to explore

Start with public versus private if you need to understand the two roles. Use local versus international to compare contractual scope without assuming the label tells you what is covered. We do not collect health histories or produce personal insurance recommendations.

Use these sources to explore the topic further. Check your insurance terms in the policy documents and ask the insurer to clarify any questions.
