People comparing health insurance while moving to or living in Portugal.
“Local” and “international” are useful starting labels, not complete definitions of cover. Compare the actual documents using the same questions.
Build a side-by-side reading sheet
Do not assume a broader geographical label means every type of care is included. Ask each provider to point to the relevant wording.
- Where can you receive planned care, and where is only emergency care covered?
- Which country of residence is accepted?
- What provider networks, reimbursement rules and payment procedures apply?
Look beyond the first year
Ask how renewal, age and a future change of residence are handled. If continuity matters, request a written explanation of what can and cannot transfer. An answer about one product should not be generalised to the entire market.
Match questions, not slogans
Use the same hypothetical treatment and country in each enquiry. Compare the documented answer, its limits and the amount you would pay. This method supports reading; it does not rank products or select a policy for you.
Sources and further reading
Use these sources to explore the topic further. Check your insurance terms in the policy documents and ask the insurer to clarify any questions.
